Final Compilation & Reflection

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 1: Proposal Development

Week 1 - Week 3
We were briefed on this module, the expectations and outcomes for the end of the semester. This module is part 1 of our final year major project and we are to finish the ideation of our chosen project this semester. Below is the assignment brief for the whole semester:

Fig 1.1 Module Brief

I teamed up with Maisarah, Myra, and Nadhrah. After brainstorming on the different ideas and topics we could explore, we decided on a fashion publication on the topic Gen Z Fashion Trends. Our initial idea proposal slides can be found below

Task 2: Design Preposition

Week 4 - Week 5
Following our presentation, we received some feedback and continued to work on our progress for this project. We distributed the tasks:

Week 5
Before class, we decided to have an online consultation with Ms. Vi to check in our progress and ensure we were on the right track. We showed her our progress for our deliverables, where we decided to partner up with SHEIN and below are the meeting notes:
- Expedite progress
- Final Execution must look complete
- Cut down 4 chapter to 2 chapters
- Deliverables need sketches
- Finalise Concept & Identity

I chose to work on the sketches for our journal set to be a part of our advertisement campaign.

After the consultation with Ms. Vityaa and Ms. Anis in class, we realized we were quite behind with our progress since our branding wasn't too strong and misaligning to our brand. So we had to rethink on how to better represent our brand and redesign the visuals for it. But since Task 2 was already due, we decided to still submit what we had so far and work on the improvements for the final task.

On week 5, we conducted our photoshoot with the models as planned. Maisarah took photos of the models while I took photos of the clothing to be used in our final layouts. The photos can be found here:

Task 3: Concept Presentation

Week 6
Since we were running out of time to discuss together, we decided to each come up with one logo/branding idea. I chose the brand name Stitch/Stitched and "Undo" as it had more flexibility, below is my progress for the logo development and the different attempts on how I envisioned our brand. I first did sketches for the logos and sent it to the group to see which ideas have the most potential to be digitized.

The two UNDO logo sketches were chosen so I proceeded to digitize them and try them out on some mockups to see how it would look like.

UNDO LOGO ATTEMPT #1

I ended up with this logo with this color scheme. I chose red as I felt that red is a strong color with a lasting impression, which aligns to what I envision our brand to be like. Then I placed the logo on a quick Photoshop mockup using one of the pictures we took of our model as a rough idea of how it would look like as a magazine cover.

UNDO LOGO ATTEMPT #2
For the second attempt, I chose a display font that I thought looked cool and first typed out the brand names to see which one I liked the look of better. I went with the all lower case 'undo' as I thought it looked the most balanced.
Fig 3.7 Trying out the font

Then I played around with the letters to see what could work and ended up with two versions, one main logo and a secondary logo. I also did a similar magazine cover mockup to see how it looked like.

Then I compiled my digitized logo to a presentable layout and its rationale to show the others later on during our discussion.

During class that week, we showed Ms. Vi our concepts and after the feedback, we decided on our brand name to be UNDO, with my logo (refinement needed), Maisarah's BARE concept and Myra's color coordination. Thus, I did the changes in the logo to finalize our branding and actually get started in our book prototype making.

We held another online meeting with each other where we discussed our final branding (colors, typefaces, logo, overall vibe. We distributed the deliverables between me, Myra, and Nadhrah so Maisarah can focus on finishing the book layout. I decided to do the website landing page and did a few versions for some exploration.

On the weekend, we met up to assemble our book prototype together. We printed a small version of our book layouts on A4 papers, cut them, glue them and made all the interactive parts by hand. We managed to finish one chapter as it turned out to be 20 pages instead of the originally planned 12 pages. However, it turned out that we needed to finish 2 chapters so we met up again to finish and refine everything we needed for Task 3.

After getting suggestions and feedback from the others, I finalized the website landing page to this:

During the second meetup, we delegated the tasks to each person for more efficiency. While Maisarah focused on chapter 2 of the book prototype, Myra and Nadhrah finishing the deliverables, I did the finishing touches on the website and our final presentation slides.

Week 7
Due date is here and we did our final presentation in class where we showed our progress and our 2 chapter book prototype, with all the interactive bits. Click here to see pictures of the final prototype.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
We proposed to Ms. Vityaa our idea of creating a fashion publication that showcases Gen Z fashion trends. The book will also be interactive to be more engaging for our target audience. Ms. said we can proceed with the idea and further refine the details.

Week 2 - Week 3
We presented our initial idea proposal and Ms. Vityaa said our idea is good but we need to take note of how to ensure our project is graphic design related and not leaning more towards fashion design. Thus, we need to take into account of the layouts and the content we put in our book.

Week 5
We showed Ms. Vityaa and Ms. Anis our current progress and they mentioned that out layout and concept is there, but needs some improvement in branding as it is lacking in representing our product. We need to ensure our concept is more unconventional and plays more towards appealing to the target audience.

The logo designs we have right now is lacking, the brand name is too long and too safe for it to better represent our brand. Ms. Vi and Ms. Anis suggested other alternatives; Unfold, Unstitched/Stitch, Undo, etc. Try to explore more. Our deliverables can also be better as we are choosing online; we need more advertisements instead of doing the PR kit (don't do SHEIN's advertising for them).

Week 6
We each showed Ms. Vi and Ms. Anis our concepts, though we decided on Maisarah's BARE identity, they felt like it was not concrete enough, so we all showed our concepts to see if we could combine each others ideas together. Ms. Vi said that BARE's identity is good but she liked UNDO's logo more and UNBIND's color coordination more. Thus, we can combine our ideas to have a final branding outcome of our shared work.

Week 7
Ms. Vityaa said she likes our final book prototype but our final presentation could've been more engaging and is lacking the process for our logo and branding process. She also mentioned that in our book layout, we should spread out the interactive pages instead of making every page interactive as there is only so many interactive page ideas we can do, and also to prevent people from being bored of having to interact with every single page.

REFLECTION

Experience
When starting this module, I didn't really know what to expect, but I did not expect it to be as stressful as it was. Working in a group was quite a challenge as we all have our own ideas, but when we combine our strengths and communicate with each other, we were able to put 4 brains into use and create an overall good project together. Though there are still improvements in our project, this module has been an opportunity to reflect on our work to be improved in the future.

Observations
Consistency is quite challenging in a team setting. Even though we discuss of what our brand would like to put out and how we want to present ourselves, at the end of the day we're only human and we all might have our own imagination of how our brand is. I think that led us to a confusing path when we were deciding our branding, which is why communication is essential. After realizing this, we were able to communicate more effectively and share our thoughts, leading us to collaborate even better and achieve our desired end product.

Findings
I learned quite a lot in this module. At first, we thought seven weeks would be a lot of time but we quickly realized that it went by very fast and we took time for granted. Through this module, I realize the importance of time and how we should delegate our tasks and time well as to not waste time. If I could redo one thing in this module, is to distribute our time and efforts more, this way we wouldn't cram everything to the end and stress ourselves out. Teamwork is essential and it is important to communicate and put in the effort to ensure we are all in the same pace. Nonetheless, I am extremely grateful to have worked alongside my teammates Maisarah, Nadrah, and Myra. I'm sure we all did our very best and achieved and end product that I personally find satisfying in the timeframe of seven weeks. Thank you guys!
