Task 3

INSTRUCTIONS

For this final task, we are to create our own design work based on one of the 3 ideas proposed in task 2. Below are my two sketches for Task 2. I decided to go with Sketch #2 since both Mr. Fauzi and I liked the police tape idea.

Week 5: Initial Poster Design
I went on Adobe Illustrator and started bringing my sketch to life. I started thinking about the colors, composition and ways to make the original design more me. I placed the design on the side of the artboard as reference.

Then, I tried to incorporate the red pool like in Sketch #2 just to see how it looked like and I realized I like this one better in comparison to my initial ones Fig 1.4.

Week 6
After getting some feedback during class, I did some changes and created 3 final variations of my design. I played around with different typefaces, colors and elements. I added some textures, fixed up the text and typography and for Option #2 and #3 I incorporated images from the movie in the poster as advised.

Rationale (250 words)
Though the original design of this poster is already good, I wanted to add my own twist and interpretation to it. I added my own touch of the police tapes to be a decorative yet functional use, which might be similar to Saul Bass' approach in design. I chose a flat illustrative style for the tapes, placed both on top and bottom of the poster, as a form of repetition to create balance and harmony together with the original illustration of the body. I kept the colors and symbols similar to the original poster since orange/red symbolizes danger to fully encapsulate the feel of the movie.

Originally, I kept the background more plain and simple with a texture to replicate the dirty and coarse nature of the movie, however it still felt lacking. Hence, it was suggested that I incorporate some stills from the movie to add depth. I chose a tense scene in the movie, where the characters look visibly stressed, which I deemed as fitting to represent the overall feel of the poster. At first, I tried a comic-style depiction of this scene, but then the composition felt out of place since the focal point and additional images were clashing and fighting for attention. So I opted for another approach, with the scenes masked and blended in the background, more subtle yet still giving high contrast and emphasis to the focal point.

Overall, I think my redesigned poster 'Anatomy of a Murder' uses the design principles to better represent the themes of this movie.

FEEDBACK

Week 5
  • Make sure to label the images properly in the e-portfolio, add explanations and write-ups as well
  • The border helps in framing the focal point and doesn't make the poster look empty
  • But maybe I can add more information, like some images of the movie in comic-style/full headshot of an image in the background/etc.
  • Try to come up with 3 different variations/mockups for the final design
Week 6
  • Mr. Fauzi said I'm practically done since this poster is already good and it shows the vibe and feel of the movie better
  • Write up the 200 word rationale and submit
