Task 2: Content Generation

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 2: Content Generation

This task is a first part to our next task which is to create an illustrated book. We were required to write a 3000 word story about any topic and create 16 illustrations based on the text.

Story
I first started writing my story. At first, I had 2 ideas, one about my journey through loneliness, and the other a tribute to my childhood. I decided to go with the second one because I felt a stronger urge and gut feeling with this one.

After highlighting the keywords I wanted to illustrate, I started sketching and created a color palette to ensure cohesion throughout the illustrations. I chose more colorful and vibrant colors for my primary colors as it reminds me of how I saw everything more colorfully as a kid.

I used IbisPaintX to create my illustrations, since I'm not particularly skilled in illustrations, I decided to go for a minimalistic, hand-drawn illustration style.

I wanted my illustrations to seem a bit more nostalgic and more child-like, hence the illustration style and the textured brush.

Then I brought some of my illustrations into Adobe Illustrator to create more pizzazz since I felt like the original illustrations were a bit lacking. I wanted the title cards for each chapter to resemble a postcard, matching my writing theme of letters/postcards.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

General Feedback:

  • Put in detail of experiences, pour feelings
  • Doesn't have to be in chronological order, like flashbacks can be better

Specific Feedback:

  • Themes of like unfinished business, quite niche, good topic

Week 3

  • Introduction, don't be too general

  • Be more descriptive & specific, to add more richness to the story

  • More things can be revealed in next stages

REFLECTION

This task was quite fun yet stressful, writing 3000 words of creative writing is something I haven't done in a while, which took me quite some time to complete all 3000 words. But once I got the flow going, it went pretty well, I eventually ended up writing 3500ish words which I was quite proud of. Since the story is a personal one, I found it easier to write as it was based on true experiences and it was almost like I was really writing to my old childhood friend(s).

The illustrations part however I struggled... despite my illustration style being the simplest and easiest of easy. Illustrations aren't my strong suit but with this experience, I'm more encouraged to improve my skills and further enhance my drawing skills as it is quite useful for designers. The help of GenAI in this task was quite useful as well, it helped me visualize some of my sentences which guided me in the illustration process. Overall, I personally think I can still improve my illustrative skills and this was another start to the process of getting better.
