Task 3: Innovative Packaging Design
TASK 3
This task is a collaboration with The School of Bioscience. Students from SBS has developed food and in need of packaging design for their product. In this project, we are required to create a new packaging design based on a collaboration project. The project aims to develop our skills in creating and designing suitable packaging that reflects the product and its target audiences.
PACKAGING DESIGN
Starting the Project
We formed our group, me and Annalien partnered up again (Group 2), then we picked our counterparts in SBS, Group 7.

After joining the meeting where the groups presented their products in week 6, we got a gist of what product we will be designing. SBS Group 7 has created a 2-in-1 gelato with teh tarik and coffee flavor. My partner & I created a shared document to note down the things in their presentation that we might need for the packaging.

Then we created a group chat on WhatsApp and came up with some follow-up questions to gain a better understanding about their product where they provided us with the following:
Moodboard
After conversing with our clients, we created a Miro board to brainstorm and come up with concepts for our gelato packaging. Our clients also gave us a reference image regarding what they wanted us to design (bottom right). We started sketching some ideas before proceeding to digitize.
| Fig. 1.6 Sketches |
We also collected some color palettes of brown/beige colors to reflect the gelato flavors (teh tarik & coffee).
Initial Designs
I created some initial designs using stock images and placeholder text for the nutrition labels, ingredients, etc. etc.
Annalien also created her own versions, maintaining the same concept and color palette.

Afterwards, we picked our favorites from each other and showed it to Ms. Vi for feedback. We ended up going with Annalien's design (bottom right), we just needed to fix a few things.

Logo & Branding
Upon discussing with our clients from SBS, they did not have a logo or brand name yet, and after asking Ms. Vi, we decided to help them generate a logo for them. They decided on the brand name "GeXato". Below is the logo Annalien generated:

We also decided to keep the brand typeface really simple, using the sans serif typeface Franklin Gothic and its different fonts.
Final Design
Annalien started finalizing and touching up on the main visuals on Photoshop. And after receiving the final visuals and ingredients label from the SBS students, I placed all the information and finalized our design to be test printed for Week 11 class.

During Week 11 class, we were required to print out our designs and bring a container/packaging true to the size of our clients' needs. I printed the packaging design found an old 500ml ice cream tub and used that. We were required to glue our printed packaging onto the tub but that's when we realized that our packaging is in the wrong size, it also should be the curved version instead.
After confusion and figuring out how to get the accurate sizes on our own, Annalien then fixed it to the real curved size and sent it to me to be printed.

I did the physical mockup and we presented our designs to the SBS students and Dr. Neo. Below are our presentation slides including a digital mockup of our design:

MERCHANDISE
The requirements are 3 additional flavors, 1 advertisement, and 4 additional merch items. We ended up with:
1. Posters
2. Gelato cup
3. Cap
4. Tumbler
5. Stickers
6. Pop-up booth
7. Final merch compilation in store view
8. Other flavors
We divided the items and I ended up with posters, gelato cup, stickers, and the final merch compilation.
Gelato Cup
I created the design on Illustrator and created a mockup with my design. I used the same color palette as the packaging and freehanded the drip to emphasize the creaminess of the gelato.
Poster
I created another mockup of the gelato cup to be used in the ad. I created several versions of the posters, adding drip effects to emphasize the creaminess of the gelato, and others.
| Fig. 1.20 Poster Drafts |
Upon the feedback, I tried to improve it, and I also created another poster but in Photoshop instead (see final poster in final submissions section. Then I created the mockups for the posters, I decided to choose a bus stop location as I've seen a lot of advertisements placed on bus stops.
Stickers
I created a sticker sheet derived from the brand logo and created a few more illustrations of a gelato cup and cone. Afterwards, I mocked it up on Photoshop.
Ms. Vi wanted a more luxurious and premium feel for the store/gelato cafe, thus I found one empty shop interior from Behance (Fig 1.23). I downloaded it and edited it on Photoshop, where I added all our merchandise items and different flavors onto it.

I added the brand logo on the top with the light-up sign and placed the ads on the screens on the sides as well as adding some shadows to the items.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
We were advised to communicate directly with our clients and ask questions about their products. We were also advised to take a look on our clients' presentation slides to get an overall gist of how they might want their packaging to look like.
Week 10
(Initial packaging design) Improve typography and alignment, small details of the liquid splash, add a background or something to bring the logo out even more. We also discussed our merchandising and promotional items.
Week 11
We printed out the digital flat, but then realized we needed the curved version instead so we fixed it and finalized our design.
Week 13
Our final booth showcase, it's better if it's an actual store instead, gives the overall brand a more luxurious feel. For the poster, the dripping element doesn't work because the main image is a realistic one, and the drip effect is too illustrative which throws off the feel. Maybe if the background was just a dark gradient with shadows and some simple wavy background would be better.
REFLECTION
Experience
Through this task I got to feel what it was like to work with a client on the other side, which made it quite challenging at first but it was an eye-opening one. I liked that we had a lot of time to complete this task, and that it was separated into two sections to not cram everything in one, however at the same time it felt like this task was never-ending which led to a bit of frustration. But at the end, we managed to pull through and produce a consistent outcome.
Observations
We researched on a lot of other packaging designs before starting, specifically for gelato and ice cream. We noticed that most ice cream packaging is brightly colored and fun looking especially since it's a cool and refreshing product on hot days. We were struggling on finding the right design direction at first since our color palette was quite brown and a little dull. But I think we managed to choose the colors that weren't too monotonous and created the 'premium' and minimalist feel that our clients wanted somehow.
Findings
I learned the importance of communication, and how to properly work with clients. There are things that I wished I could've done instead in terms of properly responding and communicating with my clients, but this serves as a learning experience for me. Working with people from different fields as well as a partner has been eye-opening and something to take note of for the future.
