Task 1: Information, Case Study & Box Packaging
INSTRUCTIONS
EXERCISES
Exercise 1: Case Study Analysis
Requirements are to choose one existing packaging design of our choice and study on the entire design, practicality, ergonomics, target audience and how the packaging carries the brand image.
I chose Doritos as my brand.

After the feedback from Ms. Vi in class, I created an improved version in PDF slides format.

Exercise 2: Box-Making
For this exercise, we were required to choose 2 loose items and create a box packaging for each of them. We are to create digital mock-ups. My selected items are a candle and teabags.

I chose the candle because when I bought it, it did not come with a box and I thought it would be interesting to create one for it. I chose the teabags because I got the idea to re-create the packaging with a matchbox packaging mechanism, I think it would be quite an efficient way to take out one teabag at a time.
Sketch/Dieline
First, I measured the items and created the dielines to have a clear idea of what exactly to design. At first, I struggled envisioning the dielines, but after some thorough imagination I was able to complete it.

Candle
After searching inspiration on the Internet, I started to design my own packaging design. I used an image of the berries from https://www.pexels.com/ as my main image. I also edited the image a little on Photoshop.
I designed the front, sides, back, and top sides of the box. Since the candle brand itself didn't have a box, I had the creative freedom to create my own design. I made sure to look on the Kens Apothecary website for the product details.

After I was satisfied with the result, I applied it on the dieline I made earlier.

Teabags
For the tea packaging, I chose BOH as my brand, and I wanted to retain the brand's essence, thus I chose similar colors as its original packaging. I also used an image of the tea plantation from https://www.pexels.com/ . I used the watercolor effect on Photoshop to edit the picture as well.

Likewise, I checked on the BOH website to ensure the ingredients and other details. Finally, I applied the design onto the dielines as well.

Mockups
Now onto the fun part! I searched for mock-ups on https://unblast.com/ and picked my favorite. However, with these mock-up templates, I couldn't ensure that the sizes remained true to the actual products. Nonetheless, I created some mock-ups for both boxes on Photoshop.

I couldn't find good mock-ups for a sleeve/matchbox type box, so I decided to go on the Pacdora website to create the mockups from the templates they have. I chose the sleeve box template, edited the dimensions and pasted my designs.

With this, I was able to create a size-accurate and shape-accurate mock-up for my tea packaging (I can even open and close the box by myself).

FEEDBACK
Week 2
General Feedback
We were advised to structure our presentations better:
brief brand history > diff products & packaging > design > concept, material, color > competitor brand
Week 3
General Feedback
- when designing, ensure to have a theme as well as concept
- make sure we have the important & necessary information about the product (logos, manufacturer, barcode, etc.)
- make dotted & straight lines, 0.25pt grey
- can use the typographic rule, can help make sure which point sizes to use
Specific Feedback
Candle packaging
- layout is okay
- but will the actual box stand out in a shelf full of items
Tea packaging
- green leaves not that matching
- gradient in the back doesn't really work
- maybe find other pictures for the tea leaves
REFLECTION
This task was quite enjoyable, I had a fun time designing my own packaging without too many restrictions. It was a process to collect all the necessary data for the labels, I had to ensure I've included the nutrition label, expiry date, instructions, and all the right information. I learned that packaging has to be pretty, yet still containing all the information we need.
