Week 1 (Module Briefing)- read the notes on our specializations in the TEAMS
- make sure to examine packaging in the designer's POV (graphical elements, colors. design principles)
- make sure not to confuse color theory & color meanings
- choose brands wisely
- quite a clear problem statement with coherence and supported by relevant research
- to close the problem statement, dedicate a short, third paragraph to briefly indicate your approach to the study (what types/brands of cereal I will study and why) and how I will conduct the study
- make sure the citations are in the correct format
- Cite the sources of Nestle & Kellogg's in APA Style
- need to justify the strengths & weaknesses of CR1 & CR2
- then I can work on CR3
- indicate the ROs to the data collection methods
- in regards to survey justification: "it's a good start but it is too general, explain briefly how it is applicable to your study"
- question 3 needs more justification & literature to support
- question 11 was worded a bit unclearly
- make sure sure to add images in Question 7
- the question is quite general so it’s okay to use pictures of cereal packaging designs from different brands
- but use the same brands chosen in the Visual Analysis for Questions 11-13
- finalize and can send out the Google Forms
- Dr. Jinchi & I looked at the responses together
- start the analysis this week first, regardless if I've gotten 80 responses or not
- when referring to the cereals, use the names instead of "Fig. 7" etc
- only use "Fig. 7" when referring to the actual images/elements used in the images
- start the presentation slides by next week
- Critical Review slides are a bit messy, try to align it
- Data Analysis part, rephrase the questions into statements instead of putting the actual questions
- Reference List (in ppt) no need to include all from the report, just the ones mentioned in the slides
- Final Report: for the table of contents, just include the ones in different pages
REFLECTION
Experience
My experience in the Design Research Methodology has been an eye-opening one. As I was able to conduct my research on my area of interest, I had an enjoyable time throughout the process, even despite the challenges I faced. As an aspiring graphic designer interested in food packaging, this research has provided me the opportunity to learn more about this topic. Alongside, I am grateful that I got the hands-on experience of conducting research myself, enriching my practical skills that can be used in my future experiences. With the dedication I put towards this module, as well as the much appreciated help from my lecturer, I would say my overall research experience was quite a smooth-sailing one.
Observations
Whilst carrying out my own research, I’ve observed the different methods of data collection and how to utilize them for each of their own purposes. I’ve gained more insight on choosing the right elements for my research, for example I was able to gain both qualitative and quantitative results from my survey to help in supporting the claims in my visual analysis. Another observation I’ve made is how crucial additional help of literature is. With the correct guidance and continuous reading, a vast understanding of a certain topic can be achieved. This understanding is exceptionally important before writing our own research as we must be knowledgeable in our writing, as well as supporting our claims and making them more reliable. With these observations, I was able to conquer the challenges I’ve faced during my research process in this module.
Findings
Throughout my research process, I’ve learned the crucial steps of performing my own research. In conducting comprehensible research, it is crucial to be able to separate and organize each step to carry out the research in an orderly manner. For example, we started off by creating a research proposal to plan out our research topics, problems, and objectives. Whilst writing our own research, it is also crucial to search up key literature to guide us in the process, which is where our critical review came in handy. It gave me the chance to jump-start in reading research articles to guide in my Task 3 research paper. Finally, after conducting necessary research, I was able to conduct my own primary data research through the 2 methods I’ve read upon beforehand. This hands-on experience gave me quite a challenge as it was the most time-consuming and the most effort was needed. However, because of this effort I was able to gain new insights regarding my chosen topic as well as refining my research and writing skills. Thus, I’ve learned the crucial role of being able to manage my time well in order to keep things on schedule. With the right time allocations for each step, I was able to ensure the quality of my work, and also leave some remaining time to fix up any improvements.
