INSTRUCTIONS

FINAL PROJECT: Animated Infographics

For this final project, we are tasked to create an animated infographic informing audience about given topic (min 1.5 - max 3 min video). It must include some form of data/statistics.

Must use the questioning technique and provide answers.

Topic: The Journey of Frozen Meat from Factory to Consumer

After listing down some ideas, we decided to do frozen meat as it is quite versatile and it's also a globally-produced product.

Research

Firstly, we gathered some research about the process of frozen meat production. We separated them into different parts in order to determine the different acts in the final video.

Task Distribution

We distributed the tasks accordingly

Timeline & Color Palette

We created an outline of the timeline of the video, including the narrative and also visual suggestions. We also decided on a color palette of pinks, and neutral colors to reflect the color of the meat.

Storyboard
Then, we created a storyboard to plan how the video will flow properly.

Assets & Illustrations
After all the planning is done, we can finally start on the actual editing of the video. Firstly, my teammates created all the assets needed for me to animate.

Animatic & Voice-over
By Week 6, I recorded a voice-over and created a simple animatic draft just to envision how the video would look like, along with seeing the durations of each scenes. We used this as progress to show Mr. Shamsul and get feedback.

Animation in After Effects
I decided to use After Effects as my main software since it is the one I am most familiar with.

I followed Mr. Shamsul's advice and created a title card with more variation, I also created a consistent sub-title card for the different Acts of the video. I used the same typeface throughout the video; "Degular Display" in its different fonts and versions.

I used a similar Scale transition for most of the text and assets, this way the transitions are more unified and not all over the place. I replicated this same scale-in transition for most of the other assets so that the animations aren't too plain.

To transition between scenes, I used Opacity keyframes to create fade-in transitions, or a Position transition, where the screen sort of slides down to reveal the next scene.

For some of the text animations, I used the Effects & Presets "Word Processor" and adjusted the keyframes according to the voice-over to make sure they line up properly.

Attempt #1 - Week 7

I continued the rest of the animations after receiving some feedback from Mr. Shamsul.
For all of the text labels, I used the same style & text box by creating a shape layer and just duplicating it every time it is needed. I also kept the colors the same for further consistency.

Final Project: Animated Infographics

Below is the final outcome of the animated infographic describing "The Journey of Frozen Meat from Factory to Consumer". It tells a III Act story separated into the different steps a pig goes through, from the farm, to production, and finally to the supermarket.

FEEDBACK

Week 6
(Fig 1.10 Animatic Draft & Progress)
- The title is too plain
- Add an existing heading on the top so viewers remember which act is playing
- Text isn't consistent
- Add more graphics (like a thermometer to show the temperature drop for example)

Week 7
(Fig 1.16 Attempt 1)
- Some illustrations are not too consistent
- The text labels in the machines are too plain, make it consistent like for the "stunner"

REFLECTION

This project was quite challenging to say the least, however starting this I already got an idea of what to do with the help of Project 2. Working in a group helped reduce in the workload as we split the parts and I did not have to do the Illustrations, despite having to animate everything at the end. I would say my part was a major part and I did my best in animating everything according to the groups' ideas. Whilst editing, I figured out how to properly do transitions in After Effects; like using motion blur to make things more smooth. Despite everyone's own different schedules, we still managed to do our parts on time and create a great final outcome.
