LECTURE

This week, we discussed the principles to design, specifically for poster design.

Fundamental principles of design:
- Emphasis
Fig 1.1 Emphasis on guitar

- Balance & Alignment
Fig 1.2 Example of balance and alignment

- Contrast: creates space & difference between elements in your design, makes sure designs "pop"
Fig 1.3 Contrast

- Repetition: repeating the same (strong) typefaces, colors can actual unifies and strengthen design
Fig 1.4 Repetition

- Proportion: the visual size & weight of the elements in a composition & how they relate to each other
Fig 1.5 Proportion

- Movement: elements in a composition are controlled so that the eye is moved according the information displayed, it creates the narrative of your design
Fig 1.6 Movement

- White space: empty space in your design, it gives the composition room to breathe

TUTORIAL

Mr. Fauzi played a video to demonstrate some creative ways to shoot product photography. Even if we don't have a studio, we can use materials we can find every day, such as a black sheet of paper as a backdrop.

Alongside, Mr. Fauzi also shared some slides and a video recording to guide us on Recoloring in Photoshop.

PRACTICAL

This week, we were given three recoloring practices with two different methods of recoloring.

Digital Imaging Exercise 2
Recoloring 1
This first practice is to recolor a black and white image to color using the Brush Tool as well as the different blending modes.
Fig 2.1 Black and White Picture

Firstly, I colored the face, I used a few colors to make it look more natural. Then I added the blending mode "Overlay".

Then I recolored the eyes with a green color and used the blending mode Soft Light.

I proceeded to color the lips with a pink color and set the blending mode to Overlay

Finally, I colored in the hair with a black color and the shirt with a purple color. I set both of them to Overlay.

Final Recoloring Exercise 1

Below is the final outcome for the first recoloring exercise:

Recoloring 2
Then, we were given another recoloring exercise, however this time we were supposed to use the colors provided on the other 2 pictures to complete the black and white picture.

Fig 3.1 BNW Pic (left) , Hair color (middle), Skin color (right)

First I placed the images in Photoshop and selected the colors using the Eyedropper tool and Brush Tool.
Fig 3.2 Selecting the colors

Then, I used the Quick Selection Tool to select and mask the skin and hair, I used the Brush Tool and Refine Edge Brush Tool to clean up the edges to make sure the mask is smooth.

Then I created a new solid color layer and used the Eyedropper Tool to select the color I've previously brushed out from the other two pictures. Then I replaced the mask layer onto that solid layer. Finally I changed the blending mode to Overlay for the skin and Soft Light for the hair.

Then I repeated the same process for the eyes, lips, shirt, and also the earring. I used the blending mode Soft Light for all of these elements.

Finally, created a mask layer of the person, changing the color fill to a purple color in order to change the background.

Final Recoloring Exercise 2
Finally, I was able to turn the black and white photo with the colors existing from two other photos.

Recoloring Exercise 3
After following the tutorial given, I now know the steps on how to recolor an image by myself. Thus, Mr. Fauzi instructed us to pick an image from the Google Drive given and recolor them ourselves. I chose the following image:

Fig 4.1 BNW Image

I repeated the steps I've learned previously, first use Quick Selection Tool to select the face/skin, then clean up the edges, create the solid layer, place the layer mask, change the blending mode to Soft Light. I made sure to exclude the eyes and lips when creating the layer mask to ensure that they won't be skin-colored.

Then I repeated the same steps for the lips, eyes, and shirt.

Fig 4.3 Lips and eyes layer mask

For all of the layers, I used blending mode Soft Light as it had the best results compared to Overlay. I used a brown-almost orange color for the skin, a dark pink for the lips, dark brown for the eyes, and dark blue for the shirt.

Finally, I masked out the subject to change the color of the background to a light blue color.
