LECTURE
Introduction to Composition
Focal Point
- a key element to design, to make the audience set their eyes on the most important part of the design
Focal Point example
- scale is used to draw attention towards/away to certain elements, signifying their importance
Scale & Hierarchy used
Balancing elements
- each element has a "weight" to it, depending on size/color
- this weight is important to take note to ensure good asymmetrical balance
Balancing elements
- aka "empty space"
- usually used to boost the design's clarity, giving the subject/design space to breathe
Use of white space
- the process of diving an image into thirds using vertical and horizontal lines
Rule of Thirds
By placing the most important element at the intersection points, a natural image is produced.
Example of using rule of thirds in photography

Example of using Rule of Thirds in Design
The Rule of Thirds is a way to:
- use composition techniques that are in line to the natural eye view
- creatively use negative space
- create a conversation between the background and subject
Golden Ratio
- a mathematical ratio found in nature
- when used in design, it fosters organic & natural-looking compositions
Golden Ratio
Examples of Golden Ratio found in nature
In design, the golden ratio creates harmony and proportion, providing a sense of artistry
- useful guideline to determine dimensions of a layout

TUTORIAL
Mr. Fauzi showed us a video tutorial of how he crated a physical collage, encouraging us to do the same.
Video 2: Physical Collage Tutorial
PRACTICAL
Physical Collage
We were supposed to create 3 compositions with cutouts from old magazines, using either the same or different elements. In the next week, with Mr. Fauzi's help, we will pick one final outcome and do the final stage of the physical collage session together, gluing the elements.
Below are the 3 compositions I came up with:
Final Composition: Physical Collage
After showing Mr. Fauzi, we decided on Composition #3.
